Sodium metal at 99+% purity, a soft silvery alkali metal supplied under oil for laboratory use. It tarnishes immediately in air and reacts vigorously with water and alcohols to release hydrogen, so it is kept and handled under an inert liquid or atmosphere.

It is used as a strong reducing agent in organic synthesis, in preparing sodium naphthalenide and related reagents, as a drying agent for hydrocarbon solvents, in the reduction of metal halides to recover reactive metals, and in sodium battery and heat transfer research.
