Manganese dioxide (MnO2) is a black-brown oxide powder supplied at 99% purity from a US source. It is stable and low in reactivity at room temperature, and functions as an oxidizer at elevated temperature.

It is used as the cathode material in zinc-carbon and alkaline dry cells, as an oxidizing agent and catalyst in chemical synthesis, and as a colorant in ceramics, glass and brick, where it gives brown and purple tones and decolorizes iron-tinted glass. It is also used as an oxidizer in pyrotechnic compositions and in water treatment.
