Barium Nitrate Ba(NO₃)₂

Barium nitrate (Ba(NO₃)₂) is a fine white crystalline powder supplied at laboratory grade, carrying roughly 36.5 percent available oxygen and showing low hygroscopicity compared with several other nitrates, so it stores and handles well.

In pyrotechnics it acts as both oxidizer and the barium source for green flame color, forming the emitting barium monochloride species when a chlorine donor is present in the composition; it is generally chosen over barium carbonate where a stronger, more saturated green is wanted. It is also used in green signal and illuminating compositions and industrially in ceramic glazes and optical glass. Barium salts are toxic.
