Phenol is primarily used as an intermediate in the production of industrial chemicals and materials, with the largest single use being in the synthesis of phenolic resins, which are thermoset resins used in plywood adhesives, construction, automotive, and appliance industries.

 It is also a key precursor to bisphenol A, used in epoxy and other resins, and caprolactam, used in the manufacture of nylon and other synthetic fibers. 

In addition to industrial applications, phenol is used in medical and household products; low concentrations are found in disinfectants, mouthwashes, and over-the-counter sore throat treatments such as throat lozenges and sprays.

It is also used in medical procedures, including chemical matrixectomy for ingrown toenails, treatment of muscle spasticity, and as a local anesthetic in otology.

 Phenol is employed in molecular biology for nucleic acid extraction via liquid–liquid phenol–chloroform extraction and in the production of pharmaceuticals, explosives like picric acid, detergents, herbicides, and various dyes.
