Citric acid is a white crystalline organic acid, supplied as food grade anhydrous material in a one-pound container. It is highly soluble in water and is the standard choice where a mild, food-safe acid is needed.

It is used to adjust pH and add tartness in food and beverage work, and as a chelating agent that binds metal ions in cosmetics, cleaning products, and plating solutions. Brewers and winemakers use it for acid adjustment. In cleaning it dissolves limescale, rust, and hard-water deposits, and it serves as a passivating rinse for stainless steel.
