Calcium chloride is a white, strongly hygroscopic salt supplied as food grade material in a one-pound container. It dissolves readily in water and gives off heat as it does, and it will pull moisture from the air if left open.

It is used for de-icing and dust control on roads, as a desiccant for drying air and solvents and for controlling humidity in storage, and as a firming agent in canned vegetables, tofu, and cheesemaking. Brewers add it to adjust water hardness. In concrete work it is used as a set accelerator, and in agriculture as a calcium amendment.
