Benzoic acid is a white crystalline aromatic carboxylic acid, supplied as food grade material in a one-pound container. It is only slightly soluble in cold water but dissolves readily in ethanol and other organic solvents.

It is used as a preservative in foods and beverages, where it inhibits mold and yeast growth in acidic products, and as a starting point for sodium and potassium benzoate. In the lab it is a common primary standard for calorimetry and for standardizing base solutions. Industrially it serves as an intermediate in the manufacture of plasticizers, resins, and other benzoyl compounds.
