Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), also known as polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH or PVAl), is a water-soluble synthetic polymer with the idealized chemical formula [CH2CH(OH)]n. It is colorless, odorless, non-toxic, and biodegradable under appropriate conditions. Unlike most polymers, PVA is not synthesized directly from its monomer (vinyl alcohol), which is unstable, but instead through the hydrolysis of polyvinyl acetate (PVAc).
