Soluble glutinous rice starch (SGRS) is primarily used as a water-soluble binder in pyrotechnics, particularly in the production of firework stars by Japanese makers.
It is valued for its superior binding characteristics compared to dextrin, a cornstarch derivative, allowing for the use of less binder in most formulas.
SGRS is especially effective in the toro method of rolling round stars, as stars made with it maintain their integrity even when re-wet, unlike those bound with dextrin which can become soft and soggy.
The starch forms a highly viscous solution when dissolved in water, which holds insoluble components of a composition in suspension more effectively than dextrin-based slurries.
Beyond pyrotechnics, glutinous rice starch, the base ingredient for SGRS, is used in the food industry as a thickener and texturizer. It acts as a hot thickener, providing elastic and homogeneous textures in creams, purees, sauces, and other preparations, with a neutral flavor and odor that does not alter the sensory profile of the final product.
It is also used in various industrial applications, including building materials (plasters, mortars, adhesives), cosmetics (oil and moisture control), textiles (yarn strengthening), paper production (binding and sizing), bio-based plastics, and pharmaceuticals (tablet binders and fillers).
