Shellac Flakes

Shellac flakes are a natural resin secreted by the lac insect, supplied in dry flake form in a 1 lb quantity. The flakes dissolve in denatured alcohol to make a liquid finish that dries quickly by solvent evaporation and hardens to a clear, durable film.

Shellac is used as a wood finish and sealer, as a barrier coat under other finishes, as a binder for pigments and in various craft and coating work, and as a resin binder in pyrotechnic compositions. Cut strength is adjusted by the amount of alcohol used.
