Manganese dioxide is a dark brown to black powder used both as an oxidizing agent and as a source of manganese, supplied in one pound quantities.

In ceramics it is a common colorant, giving brown, purple-brown and speckled effects in glazes and clay bodies depending on particle size and firing. It is the cathode material in alkaline and zinc-carbon dry cells, is used in glassmaking to decolorize iron-tinted glass or to produce amethyst tones, and serves in water treatment media for the removal of iron and manganese from supply water.
