Iron Oxide Red is a reddish-brown powder produced by roasting or calcining iron ore. It is commonly used as a catalyst in composite and whistling rocket propellant formulations, as well as in Candy rocket propellant. Additionally, it is added to glitter formulations to achieve desired effects.
In fireworks production, Iron Oxide Red serves as a colorant, imparting bright red or orange-red hues to the display. It is added to pyrotechnic compositions in small amounts, typically around 5-10% by weight, to achieve the desired color effect.
Iron Oxide Red’s catalytic properties make it a valuable addition to primes and colored star compositions, enhancing their ignitability and burn rate. It is also used in thermite mixtures, which produce high heat and molten iron.
Iron Oxide Red is incorporated into fireworks compositions using standard mixing and blending techniques. Its fine powder form allows for easy dispersion and uniform coloring of pyrotechnic compositions.
Iron Oxide Red is not particularly toxic or dangerous. However, it can stain surfaces and textiles, so care should be taken during handling and storage to avoid spills.
While Iron Oxide Red is generally safe to use, proper safety precautions should be followed, including wearing protective clothing and handling the pigment in well-ventilated areas to minimize exposure.
Store Iron Oxide Red in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep containers tightly sealed to prevent contamination and maintain product integrity.
