Diatomaceous earth is a soft, friable silica powder made from the fossilized frustules of diatoms. This is food-grade uncalcined material, the amorphous silica form rather than the calcined filter grade.

It is used as a mechanical insecticide against ants, cockroaches, bed bugs and other crawling insects, as a filtration medium for water, beer and other beverages, as an absorbent for liquid spills, and as an anti-caking agent in bulk solids. Gardeners also work it into soil for drainage and pest control. The fine dust is best handled with a mask.
