Barium Sulfate BaSO4 Powder

Barium sulfate (BaSO4) is an inert, insoluble white powder supplied at lab grade in fine or micronized form. Its high specific gravity of roughly 4.0 to 4.5, low oil absorption, and chemical inertness make it a functional filler and extender rather than a reactive ingredient.

It is used in paints, primers, and automotive and industrial coatings for opacity and density, in plastics and rubber to add weight and stiffness, in radiographic contrast preparations, and as a barium source in some pyrotechnic compositions. Unlike the soluble barium salts it is not absorbed by the body.
