Barium Carbonate (Withurite) Fine Powder

Barium carbonate (BaCO3), the synthetic equivalent of the mineral witherite, is a dense, fine white powder supplied at lab grade, 99 percent or better. In ceramics it is the source of BaO used for barium matte and crystal matte glazes and as a flux that shifts color response from cobalt, copper, and iron.

Small additions to clay bodies precipitate soluble sulfates and prevent efflorescence on bricks and tiles. It is also used in specialty and optical glass, as a precursor for ferrites, and as a green colorant in pyrotechnics. Barium carbonate is toxic if ingested.
